Tribute to
Dr. Nazem Alhusein, M.D., MSBA, FAAP

Dr. Nazem Ahmad Alhusein was born and raised in Deir Ezzor, Syria. He was one out of 10 children. Graduating at the top of his class, he began medical school at the University of Aleppo in 1980. He always had a passion for learning and excelled in every subject in school. He constantly had his head in a book as a kid and his parents used to complain of all his time spent reading. It was to the point where he would lose himself in books. His drive for always wanting to learn more about every subject led to his passion for medicine. He was not only board certified in Pediatrics, but he received three additional board certifications since he loved to broaden his knowledge.

Dr. Alhusein’s journey began at the University of Aleppo School of Medicine, where he completed his medical degree in 1986. He then went on to complete his residency in Pediatrics at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI from 1990-1993. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1995. He served as an attending at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Beaumont Hospital – Dearborn for over 22 years, providing care for newborn and pediatric patients. Recognizing the importance of business in building his private practice, he also completed of Master of Science in Business Administration from Madonna University in Livonia, MI in 2000. His love for learning continued as he received his American Board of Preventive Medicine in 2014 and his American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2018.

Dr. Alhusein began his career as a solo practitioner in primary care when he purchased Dr. Ira Leventer’s practice at 20211 Ann Arbor Trail in Dearborn Heights, MI. From then, he founded River Oaks Pediatrics and served the community for over 20 years. He focused on quality care and treated his patients like his own children. His children can attest to this as they would see him spending hours after work, reviewing complicated cases and going above and beyond in order to ensure that his patients would receive the utmost quality care. He truly loved and cared for each and every one of his patients and their families. He loved forming relationships with all of the children and adults who came to his office, as they came to Dr. Alhusein for years. Quality care was his focus and his dedication.

Loving Family Man and Physician Dedicated to the Community

He was a loving father of four children who valued the importance of family time. After a long day of work, his favorite thing to do was to spend time with his family over a home-cooked meal while cracking jokes and telling stories. He was very charismatic and passionate; his eyes would light up as he loved to make everyone around him smile and laugh. He wore his heart on his sleeve and lived to make sure that his children, loved ones, and patients always felt cared for and appreciated. He was a great listener and leader, continuously putting his all into his passions, interests, hobbies, and career, no matter how big or small the task at hand was. He was a role model and mentor not only to his children but to the entire community. Dr. Alhusein dedicated his life to River Oaks Pediatrics and his legacy lives on through his medical practice, family, patients, and community.

Note from family: The family would like to express their deepest gratitude from the bottom of their hearts to each and every one of you for your love and support during this difficult time. Thank you for showing up, sending your messages and sharing the wonderful stories and memories of Dr. Alhusein. He will truly be missed by not only his family, friends and colleagues but by the community as a whole. It has left a hole in our hearts but may his legacy live on in each and every one of the community members that he has touched.
